  • What actually IS swing dance?
Apart from the best thing you'll ever do? There are different styles of dance which all fall under the swing umbrella, but they are all united by the fact they were created in the 1920s-40s. The main one we teach at DUSS is lindy hop, but other common ones are: solo jazz (sometimes called vernacular jazz) and Charleston, balboa, Collegiate Shag (yes...we know), St Louis Shag, and blues. Look these up on YouTube to see what they look like! Lindy hop in particular has a long and rich history - it evolved in African American communities in Harlem, New York, and influenced the desegregation of the Savoy Ballroom. We dance to swing jazz music, examples of which can be found on our Spotify - just search durhamuniswingsoc (or check out the Music section of the website!).
  • I didn’t sign up at the Fresher’s fair, can I still join?"
Absolutely! We welcome beginners all year around; just keep an eye out on our Facebook page for info on our next lesson and come along! Your first lesson is always FREE.
  • Do I need a partner?
No! Whilst we do primarily focus on partner dancing, there is no requirement to bring your own partner as you will rotate partners in class. This is a social dance, and we do try to get people used to dancing with lots of people! (If you have any issues with this and would rather stick with one person, please do speak to our welfare officer and let the teachers know. We want to make sure you all feel as comfortable as possible.)
  • But I can't dance!
So why not learn? Many dancers today are people who said they couldn't dance (some of the biggest names in the world started in their mid-20s and had no prior dance experience) - and we love teaching people with two left feet :)
  • What should I wear?
Whatever you feel most comfortable in. Whilst swing dances are vintage dances, there is no requirement to dress vintage or dress up (although of course, if you want to, do feel free!). We recommend wearing something you can move around in (and ideally shoes which do not have too much grip!).
  • I can't come every week... Is there any point coming once in a while?
Absolutely! We cover new material every sunday class, and if you are struggling with something which may require prior knowledge, the teachers will be sure to help you out as much as possible to catch you up.
  • Okay, I’m hooked. How do I join?"
Membership can be purchased on the DSU website. Just search for ‘Swing’! For just £15 a year you can get all lessons for free (otherwise £2 each) and discounts on our events! What are you waiting for?!
